So far, we’ve talked about what AAC is and how to choose the right tools but let’s dig into implementing AAC in the Classroom. Now, let’s get practical. How do you actually use AAC every day in your classroom? And what should you do when challenges arise? Let’s jump into some tips and tricks for making AAC work for you and your students.

Tip 1: Start Small with Daily Routines
The easiest way to start using AAC is by incorporating it into your daily routines. Don’t overthink it—just start small.
Try this:
- Morning meetings – Use AAC to let students share how they feel, what the weather is, or what their favorite part of the day will be.
- Choice-making – Give students simple choices using AAC during snack time, free play, or transitions. Let them pick between different activities or snacks.

Tip 2: Model AAC for Your Students
You can’t expect students to use AAC if they don’t see it in action. Here is how Implementing AAC in the Classroom works. Modeling is key! Show students how to use their AAC devices by using it yourself.
Don’t miss part 1 and part 2 of this series!
Here’s how:
- When you ask a question, use the student’s AAC tool to model how they can answer.
- Encourage peers to model using AAC as well. This creates a more inclusive environment and encourages students to use their tools more often.

Tip 3: Overcoming Challenges
Let’s face it—things don’t always go as planned. Maybe the device isn’t working, or the student is refusing to use it. Don’t give up!
Here’s how to troubleshoot:
- If the device malfunctions – Have a backup plan. Keep a low-tech tool like a picture board handy in case the device has technical issues.
- If the student resists – Start with fun or familiar words. Use vocabulary they enjoy, like their favorite toy or hobby. Over time, they’ll get more comfortable using it for other things.
Real-Life Success Story
One of my students, who initially resisted using an AAC device, eventually came around after we added his favorite superhero to the device. By making it personal and relatable, he was excited to use the device and started communicating more regularly.

Your Final Steps: Make AAC a Daily Practice
AAC is all about consistency. The more you use it, the more natural it becomes for your students. Incorporate it into every part of the day, and don’t be afraid to make adjustments as you go.
